Modern dance classes at EDC have been a popular staple among a wide age group over the last several years. The Modern program was mainly introduced by associate faculty member Andrea Downie, and is now taught by our most recent senior faculty addition, Shelby Carlson. The genre has become an integral part of our year end recitals and dance competitions throughout the season. Defined as a free, expressive style of dancing, Modern started in the early 20th century as a reaction to classical ballet. In recent years it has included elements such as multi media that is not usually associated with classical dance.
